Scottish Hotel of the Year Awards 2009
4287 people and 21255 category votes later - we are so delighted to announce, just a trifle later than planned - the final results of SHOTY 2009 – the 6th year HotelReview Scotland has sponsored, hosted and managed the Scottish Hotel of the Year Awards (not to be confused with any other awards scheme).
During the nomination period which commenced early Novermber 2008 until close at 9th January 2009, whereupon voting almost immediately commenced, the breadth and depth of nominations told us we were about to have a memorable SHOTY awards year. And the decision to host the whole process on line has met with almost unanimous approval from the hospitality trade and industry fraternity, making us all the more determined to continue the process this way, and to ensure that winners, runners up - and even nominees, can avail themselves of continuous promotion never previously afforded by us or any other awards scheme.
We too are very excited about the award winners. The spread, from city to outpost, from small personally run to brilliantly brand or group managed, shows that we are holistic in our appreciation of and desire to please and help promote and develop the very best of Scottish hospitality. Remarkably, despite 50 categories, a format much reduced from past years (again listening to public demand) - there is a clear trend demonstrated in the results that the very best excel at many facets of great hospitality and deservedly are admired by their peers. Last year. over 750 awards and commendations materialized from the results which many thought was far too many and almost diluted the kudos of the recipients. Not this time. Awards are for the very best, and only the very best. And what pleased us most was the fact that many leading hoteliers and industry people voted for their peers, their heroes - and not for themselves.
Consumer generated media and user generated content are here to stay, and grow. That’s why we did it the way we did, and will continue to develop this stance. No glitz no glamour, just honest to goodness best of breed awards recipients seriously intent on developing their businesses and promoting their great messages on the world wide web. Ultimately in this day and age, the ‘public’ are the experts, like it or like it not – and in the process we checked all the major travel review and social media travel sites and on the basis of what we saw – not one of them could have questioned the propriety or quality of any of our award recipients.
Consequently, we will now embark on an intensive promotional programme to bring the best of Scotland to the person that really matters these days, the on line visitor and travel planner. The site you’re currently visiting will not now go to sleep as it has done in the past. It will become another living organism for 12 months until the 2010 awards, affording all winners, runners up and nominees the opportunity to continuously promote their successes to win travel business and hotel bookings their quality deserves.
